Review into future of South Essex Homes

A FORMER senior councillor has called into question the need to review the future of South Essex Homes.

The organisation manages Southend Council’s housing stock on its behalf and nationally all such organisations are being scrutinised and reviewed as management agreements are coming to an end.

In a meeting to take place on Wednesday October 17 the community services and culture scrutiny committee will consider whether to keep the organisation going or to bring it back in house.

Mark Flewitt, former cabinet member, said: ”Why are we doing this if South Essex Homes has been given a clean bill of health from the Audit committee, is trading well and has rent arrears under control? Why are we going through this torturous process now when there is no £1million savings identified?”

South Essex Homes has held responsibility for the everyday running of more than 6,000 council properties for the last seven years, but chiefs are considering axing it to cut costs.

bring the council stock back under control of the council rather than a quango operated clandestinely by some of it's members for more profit....

Absolutley silly comment, South Essex Homes makes no profit. It is a 'not for profit' organisation.

EXCUSE ME BUT MARK FLEWITT IS ON THE BOARD OF SOUTH ESSEX HOMES and should know better than to try to influence opinion or indeed a vote if there is one. Homes should be brought back under the council's umbrella as we do not need the expense of another building and multi persons to ensure 6,000 homes are run properly. It matters because at the moment it is too fragmented and there is not enough accountability when things go wrong with the work and too many people involved.

its about subcontracting bungs, its about deals done over dinner. its about a monopoly over a shed load of cash that should be used for one of the councils key core functions 'to provide affordable housing' I would love to think that the private housing market is an honourable means of social housing but the reality is an astronomically overpriced ubre-slum ie Southend/westcliff.

Anything with the words 'private' and 'council' in it is sure to be as bent as a two bob note..

i also find it remarkable that social housing was born from the lanes and slums and the wealthy landlords that rented them.

i observe the fact that now that most of the council housing has been sold in 'right to but' what we see is a dramatic return to bad landlords and harsh rents.

of course a Tory will speak out against any change in the comfy way that the council manages (or lack thereof) its council stock.

because its bad for business so to speak.
