Has Sadlers Farm left you baffled?

Has Sadlers Farm left you baffled? Has Sadlers Farm left you baffled?

NEW road signs have been installed on Sadlers Farm to help confused motorists better navigate the new layout - but have they left you confused?

Essex County Council has spent £63million transforming the infamous Benfleet roundabout in a bid to simplify the multi-roundabout junction and improve journey times.

Serious safety concerns were raised after drivers travelling along the Southend-bound A13 towards Canvey Way have been seen turning left into oncoming traffic by mistake leading to accidents.

We want to know if you have been confused or taken a wrong turn on the new layout at Sadlers Farm? You can also tell us your stories by leaving comments here.

I travel towards the roundabout every day coming home from work. The logical route was left hand lane along the A13, over the new bridge, as the lane splits stay in the right hand lane. This would put you in the correct lane to go along London Road. Since two days ago if you do that you find you have moved over a lane so have to move back. People still don't understand about how to keep to the 50 and 30 speed limits which will also cause accidents.

Not only has it left me confused but several people who have visited the area from London have told me it is totally confusing. One person who used to live locally told me they thought signage was inadequate as was expected to guess that the two right hand lands approaching Sadlers from Pitsea A13 sent them off to turn right onto Canvey approach road instead of being able to follow roundabout and get onto Hadleigh bound A13
Anpother visitor from London coming along same approach ended up being on A127 and into Southend due to inadequate signage.
Even living locally many people find it totally confusing and guesswork to know which lane to take.
Coming from A127 to Sadlers roundabout badly signposted as to when to branch off either right towards Londonbound A13 or left towards Hadleigh bound A13. What with roadworks and no lights potentially extremely dangerous.

What people need to remember is if they get in the wrong lane, SODDING WELL STICK TO THAT LANE if you cannot change to the correct lane safely. Do not just bang an indicator on and force your way across. Take the wrong lane and then find a place to turn round safely. So annoying.

I really dont see how people find this confusing. Its just a roundabout for god sake. If you cant navigate your way around a roundabout, or read signs, you really shouldnt be on the road.

The rules of a roundabout usually are to enter and come off where you want to. This one is marked out with so called "dedicated lanes". Most of us by now know which lane goes where but the layout has been changed.
There is plenty of warning from Pitsea that two lanes go to the A130 and that two go on toward Sadlers. The problem I have is idiots who chose to ignore the speed limit and hurtle down the two lanes for Canvey and then push their way left to go to London Road. If everyone stuck to the speed limit they would have some thinking time to get into the correct lane.

I'm sure people would moan over a loaf of bread if given the chance. It works a lot freaking better than the last layout which had exceeded it's design capacity. People were crying out for a new layout, we now have it. Stop moaning and learn to read signs or surrender your licence to the DVLA.

well, i have to say even though it has taken ages to construct, the junction is a huge improvement on the previous layout, where i often had to join an east-bound queue at Five Bells to access Canvey Way!!!!!!! The only major mistake i think is the very short slip road at the top of Canvey Way to join the A13--highly dangerous and so annoying as there is plenty of room there to make the slip road longer!!!!

GentleGiant says...
10:04am Thu 4 Oct 12

There are two lanes that go from Pitsea to Benfleet at the roundabout.

The problem is that people ignore the ridiculously short inside lane and just use the outside one.

They then decide to cut across into the lane meant for the other lane.

The other confusing and stupid design is the one single ahead lane at tarpots. This is blocked by traffic turning right. The other lane is marked as ahead and then suddenly marked as left only.

The final stupid design (and maybe they will correct it) is the missing lane from the slip from the A1245 (old A130) coming from the A127 and joining the A130 going south. Traffic is forced over for about 50 yards when the lane starts again.

I avoid sadlers as much as poss now its a nightmare!!! The way the lanes from the new bridge progress onto the actual roundabout is ridiculous, numerous times now I've cars come up the inside of me (shorter lane towards a130) who wanted to go towards Benfleet and have then cut across in front of me and only just missed hitting me, 2 occassions stick to mind more than others firstly. A van that obviously didn't use his mirrors causing me to stop suddenly and nearly be hit by the car behind me unfortunate for him the company name and number were displayed on the van so his boss had a very irate woman on the phone and secondly a complete div who did the same thing but was more interested in the mobile phone call he was making and he had the cheek to shout abuse at me when he was in the wrong for more than 1 reason. Its a complete nightmare and needs better signage

That's because you are moving into the wrong lane on the roundabout, not them. There's is no 'A130 lane', traffic for the A130 uses the underpass. Both left lanes that join the roundabout from the A13 are valid for the use of traffic heading to Benfleet.

It's people like you that are making it a 'nightmare'.

BenfleetBarrel says...
11:38am Thu 4 Oct 12

As GentleGiant put it - there are two lanes for the A13 to progress onto the roundabout from Pitsea and then on to the two lanes down to Tarpots.
It's people who drift from the right lane on the A13 queue at the lights onto the left lane on the roundabout that cause problems.
This is made worse by the stupid left-only lane at Tarpots.

Or has everyone realised that if you stick to the speed limit, and drive within your limitations rather than how you would on the wii box 360 connect, there's little, if any, chance of skidding about uncontrollably?

Have to agree that the new layout is a sight better than the old mini-roundabout system. There are few hold-ups now and if everyone sticks to the rules there will be far less chances of accidents occurring.

every friday night for the past three weeks there has been a smash on the aproach to saddlers, the road is well signposted, its so much better than it used to be. unfortunately there are too many people who just dont have a clue about driving sensibly and safely. i have seen too many of them realising they are in the wrong lane and pulling over at the last moment, i have also seen people turning left and ending up travelling the wrong way up the a13 instead of going straight on to canvey.
if you cant negotiate a perfectly good junction then you shouldnt be driving.

The old layout, before any works started, only signposted Southend as via A130/A127. There were no signs for Southend via A13 (it's congested enough through that residential area, without non-locals being directed through there instead of using the main trunk road of A127).

I must say i used the roundabout for the 1st time in a week today and noticed they have changed the road markings. As they have not yet put the lettering down when i came from Benfleet to go round to A130 i ended up 3 lanes from the exit off the roundabout as the lane i have been using for the past 2mnths had changed. Im not complaining its just an observation and tomorrow i will ensure i remember what lane i should be in. The new layout of the whole area is now brilliant, i never get stuck on the A130 towards saddlers farm anymore, i for one am quite pleased

I hate Sadlers Farm Roundabout and never use it (unless I'm in the bus going to Basildon) even in that you are tossed from side to side as the approach on the roundabout is so uneven! I now drive along Essex Way to Hadleigh Roundabout, Rayleigh Weir and then to Pitsea via Pound Lane turning right at the end and either shop in Tescos or go to Basildon or Lakeside. I return via A127 to Rayleigh Weir and back home. I reminded my sister in Kent about the changes and she came along the A130 and ended up in Chelmsford some months ago! She was forced into that lane by the speeding traffic.

Would it not be the most logical thing to install all the lighting first and get that operational? that way drivers could read the signs that have been installed as well as making it safer to negotiate the lane changes and cones, it would also allow the contractors to work longer in well lit conditions and maybe just maybe they might then be able to finish ahead of schedule.

What makes me really cross about this is that you have jeopardised the poor van driver's livelihood because of your own inability to read a road sign. I hope you phone the company back and make an apology.
Ok, so what about the idiot that is using the mobile phone whilst driving. As far as I knew, isnt that now an offence. Perhaps it was you driving that car?
Now an offence?? it has been an offence for years that carries points and a fine so if you believe it is only now an offence perhaps you should reread the highway code and resit your test as you obviously dont know what you are talking about
Perhaps you should read my comment again., I was actually defending you!
