Updated: Helicopter search after man missing in Southend

Emergency services were alerted around 11.30am to the coast off Southend, when a member of the public spotted a man in difficulty in the water.

The Coastguard Service, RNLI  and police marine unit immediately launched a search, however no one was located. RNLI officers searching the beach found clothing and personal items.

Police say these relate to a 52-year-old man from London and are trying to locate his next of kin.

A thorough search of the water off the Western Esplanade continues and emergency services will remain to search the area as the tide recedes.

Anyone with witness information is asked to contact Police at Southend on 101.

Yes you muppet, a RAF rescue helicopter, RNLI boat and police maritine boat searching were dispatched. Don't dismiss stuff just because you weren't there.

Was down at Adventure Island today and witnessed the RAF helecopter searching the coast line for a good period of time so must have been some substance to the call out.

I think you missed the posters point, It was about the spelling not the rescue (or resuce)

Would these search and rescue helicopters be able to do their job efficiently if there was an airport in the estuary?

Nope, most of the sailing events like the Barge Match and yacht club events would also be curtailed.
