Updated: Police Helicopter searching for missing person in Southend

THE police helicopter was out above Southend town centre on Saturday afternoon searching for a missing man.

Concerns were 20 year-old, who has learning difficulties, after he took a drugs overdode.

Police were alerted shortly before midday, and the helicopter was deployed around an hour later.

The man was finally found by officers on the ground in York Road at around 2.30pm.

He was sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

why are they using a helicopter to find someone in a busy high street . . . if ever there was a case when eyes are better on the ground, then this is it . . . unless the person they are seeking is clambering over the rooftops

No elaboration whatsoever. Why report news if they have no details to report?

So the police took a decision to send up the helicopter to help find someone & save his life. That's disgusting, is it?

Oh, wait, according to you, he was only "an idiot who took too many pills" so we let him die, do we? Funny, the article doesn't explain what he took, why he took it, whether it was accidental or not, but you write him off as an idiot. Something to do with his learning difficulties, was it? How nice of you.

I hope the police never have to put up the helicopter to search for you or your family, as I'm feel sure you wouldn't want to be judged by idiots on this website now, would you?

I will explain how the system works. When a police helicopter is seen to be making a search, a reporter will phone the police press office for details and will often be given the most basic details. Should the story develop it will be elaborated upon, as in this case and further details will then be published. Should the police require help from the public they will contact the press and ask for it.
Perhaps critics of the Echo should wait a while to see if the story becomes more important before commenting negatively.

I'm afraid every time I've had to use the system, they've given me far far more information first off than the basic. They've told me the age of the person, the location they were last seen, Criminal or missing person and gender.

The Police press office is quite helpful in that respect, so the Echo should have had the details - if they contacted the right person...
