A PAWNBROKERS’ shop was broken into with thieves making off with jewellery from the window display.

The theft happened at H&T Pawnbrokers in Market Avenue, Basildon Town Centre.

Police are unable to confirm the value of the jewellery that was taken and they were unable to find the suspects.

An H&T spokesman said: “We can confirm a burglary took place at our store in Basildon in the early hours of Tuesday, October 17 while the store was closed.

“The offenders managed to gain access to a small amount of retail stock in the window area, some of which was taken.

“They did not gain entry to the customer property area. The police are currently investigating.”

The incident adds to series of other burglaries in the town centre’s shops in recent weeks.

On September 25, thieves smashed through Lawson’s Pie and Mash Shop’s front door and snatched two tills, a tipping jar and charity boxes. They also damaged the two tills and took the money in them. The damage cost the owner £3,250 to repair.

Around the same time, police received reports of an attempted break-in at the Spoon World Buffet and Bar.

The owner of the Vaping Lounge suffered a huge loss when three burglars ransacked the shop and stole more than £5,000 worth of vaping equipment on October 3. It is believed they climbed through the toilet window which had been boarded up by the owner.

They stole a selection of vaping paraphernalia, a charity box and four boxes of chocolate.

The trio used a bin from the shop to carry out their haul of stolen goods.

An Essex Police spokesman said: Police received a call at 8.45am on Tuesday, October 17, to reports of a burglary at a business in Market Pavement, Basildon.

“Officers received reports that suspects had gained entry to H&T Pawnbrokers before removing jewellery from a window display.

“Police attended the scene but were unable to locate the suspects. Anyone with information is asked to contact Basildon CID reference number 42/147782/17 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
