POLICE are asking residents of retirement complexes to keep their doors locked at all times following a spate of targeted burglaries.

A woman was found hiding behind a door in a flat in Burr Hill Chase, Southend, at about 7.30pm on Monday, April 17.

When challenged, she said that she had accidentally walked into the wrong home and left immediately.

Nothing was stolen.

In a second burglary, which is believed to be linked, the suspect left with seven items of gold jewellery.

A property in Brook Road, Benfleet, is believed to have been targeted by the same woman at about 7.30pm on Friday, April 21.

Essex Police said that the suspect seems to be deliberately targeting vulnerable people who live in retirement complexes and sheltered or warden-controlled accommodation.

An Essex Police spokesman said: “The suspect is described as being around 20 years old, between 5ft 3in and 5ft 4in tall, of large build with dark hair that was tied up.

“Police are advising all residents of retirement complexes, sheltered and warden controlled housing to keep their front doors locked at all times and not to allow people they do not know in to the building.”

Kevin Blake, Southend neighbourhood watch co-ordinator, said: “A lot of these complexes have spy holes in the doors and I would encourage residents to use them.

“A lot of people don’t bother to use it and just open the door to see who is there.

“Check before you open the door.

“If you feel threatened, because it can be intimidating, then that when you should dial 999.

“You just don’t know what might happen - it is better to be safe rather than sorry.

“You will never get criticised for calling the police if you are concerned.

“Remember to always be on your guard if you are not expecting visitors.”

So far, no arrests have been made and enquiries are continuing.

Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact Det Con Paul Ross at Southend CID on 101 or independent crime-fighting Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
