A CLUB night has scooped the top prize for being the best soul event outside of London for the second time.

The bi-monthly Soul by the Jetty, which takes place at the Lobster Smack, in Haven Road, Canvey, was established in 2009 by Canvey DJs Jonny Layton and Mark Messent, who were inspired by The Goldmine - once a hugely popular nightspot on the island in the Seventies and Eighties,

They were later joined by friend Brian Kelly and within a year the Jetty Boys were regularly playing the best of soul, funk, jazz-funk and soulful house music to growing crowds.

The club has now once again been voted as the Best UK Soul Club Outside London for 2016/2017 as part of a nationwide competition hosted by the Soul Survivors Magazine. It previously won the title in 2013.

Jonny, 51, said: “We set up The Jetty as we felt that there was little choice at the time for the mature clubber looking to re-live their youth and dance the night away to quality soul music.

“Since 2009 the soul scene has exploded again with multiple radio stations and events on most weekends in Essex and even nationwide and that’s why retaining this award is so special to us and proves we must be still doing something right!

“Thanks to everyone took the time to vote for us, we are so chuffed!”
