PLANS for a supermarket and memorial garden have been unveiled as developers press ahead with the long-awaited revamp of the dilapidated Laindon Centre.

These images - showing how the shopping complex could look by 2024 - will go on display today.

Swan Housing, the centre’s sixth owner in the past decade, has been fine-tuning plans for a mix of shops and new homes since more than 600 residents turned up to an initial exhibition in July.

Land around the existing war memorial was going to be designed into a square, but Swan has now revealed designs for a community garden.

A supermarket and dedicated office for the housing association are also included, with the site set to be modelled on a traditional High Street.

Feedback from residents showed they wanted “something vibrant and modern” with a large car park.

Project Director, Luke Riley said: “Our project team has listened to the feedback we received at the public exhibitions earlier this year and hope our latest design proposals demonstrate this.

“Our designs endeavour to strike the balance between being modern whilst respecting the wider context of the location. They aim to provide a distinct character and identity for the entire area.

“We have ensured that the War Memorial retains its current location and we plan to create a space that can be utilised for memorial events.

“We acknowledge we need to provide adequate free parking for shoppers whilst managing the issue of commuter parking.

“Exact details of the parking control measures will be agreed with Essex Highways with whom we will also work to meet feedback on traffic management and access.”

The updated plans will go on display at Great Berry Residents Association, in Nightingales, Langdon Hills, from 3pm until 7pm today and at the Laindon Community Centre, in Aston Road, Laindon, between 3pm and 7pm tomorrow.
