CAMPAIGNERS have welcomed news that an island flooding trouble spot has been fixed by contractors.

Fears had spread among residents that Furtherwick Road’s junction with Ash Road was already showing signs of flooding at the end of August, just days after work had been completed to re-lay the road with fresh tarmac.

The source of the problem is believed to be a blocked drain which prompted residents to begin a month-long campaign with Highways chiefs to fix the problem.

Anglian Water contractors were able to complete the work to unblock the drain on Friday.

Robert Tunstall, of Ash Road, led the calls fearing that flooding could strike the area yet again as the weather worsens.

Mr Tunstall, 90, who heads up his local neighbourhood watch, says he is delighted work has been carried out and hopes it can protect the area from future flooding.

He said: “It’s about time, as we have been looking to get something done about this for a while.

“I actually noticed the road was becoming flooded again when I was getting my paper, and I thought it would only get worse as time went on.

“The Highways people had done a really good job of re-laying the surface on Furtherwick Road, so it was only a question of finishing the job as we could see it.

“Hopefully now this will stop floods in the area from happening again.”

Major resurfacing work was carried out in Furtherwick Road and saw a week of night closures put in place.

The Echo reported last month that Anglian Water has cleared rubbish, leaves and bricks from underground pipes outside Monico Dining Rooms, in Eastern Esplanade, as part of a £2million programme of repairs.

In a bid to combat flooding, Essex County Council is urging residents to fill in a survey to help the authority “better prepare for future rainfall.”

The Canvey Flood Survey 2016 will ask how flooding affects them and what information and help they need in the event of a flood.
