A SCHOOLBOY with cerebral palsy will see his wish granted when he swims with dolphins on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday.

Next month, eight year-old Richard Traveller, from Canvey, will travel to Portugal with his family for the dream trip.

He found out about the experience, which has been organised by shopping centre Lakeside and the Dream Factory charity, during a visit to Hamleys toy shop.

Store mascot Hamley Bear even paid a special visit to the Lakeside branch to present Richard with his own cuddly dolphin, and an underwater digital camera.

Michaela Traveller, Richard’s mum, said: “He is so excited about swimming with dolphins as it’s something he’s wanted to do for a very long time!

“I’m grateful to Lakeside and The Dream Factory for organising such a wonderful trip for our family.

“As a result of Richard’s health problems it is often difficult to take time out, so this holiday will be amazing for all of us.

“In addition, the camera will be fantastic for Richard to help document his trip and will help create lasting memories.”

Cerebral palsy is a neurological condition caused by a problem in the parts of the brain which are responsible for controlling muscles.

It causes muscle weakness, and balance and co-ordination problems.

The condition means Richard needs a wheelchair to get around.

Lakeside has pledged to raise £25,000 for the Dream Factory, which aims to bring hope and happiness to children and young adults with severe disabilities and life-threatening conditions, by the end of 2015.

Staff have already taken on a 500 mile bikeathon.

Donna Callander, Lakeside marketing manager, added: “It was wonderful to grant Richard’s dream of swimming with dolphins and we look forward to granting even more wishes.

“The Dream Factory is a fantastic charity and we have been overwhelmed with the support we have received, not only visitors to the centre, but staff and retailers who have got on board by doing their own fundraising.”
