THE WORLD’S last remaining airworthy Vulcan XH588 paid a flying visit over Southend Airport as part of her farewell tour before retiring from the skies at the end of summer 2015.

It was an emotional moment as the XH588 bomber flew over it’s sister aircraft the Vulcan XL426, which has been stationary at Southend airport for many years, on Sunday afternoon. (28/06) Crowds flocked to the airport to see the two aircraft, who served in the same squadron in the 1980’s and were the RAF’s, together for the very last time.

Phil Whalley, 49, a factory worker, of Westcliff, at the event said: “It was simply wonderful to see XH558 flying over XL426 today to say goodbye.

“I have to be honest I got a bit of lump in my throat and a bit of grit must have got in my eye as it seemed to be watering a little as I heard XH558 howl for the last time over Southend.”
