THE dramatic Wembley win on Saturday night was also enjoyed by Southend’s most recognisable supporters.

As Phil Brown’s team sealed their victory, Southend was trending nationwide on social media as tens of thousands of viewers were glued to their TV screens.

Blues’ play-off final win rivalled the Eurovision Song Contest, taking place at the same time, for the attention of Britain’s Twitter users.

Among the social media users enjoying the win was Countdown’s Rachel Riley, a former Southend High School for Girls pupil.

She tweeted: “Listening to my Mum’s commentary of Southend’s penalty shoot out was priceless today. Well done Shrimpers!”

Former Blues and England striker Stan Collymore said: “Absolutely delighted for everyone at Roots Hall! Brilliant, brilliant stuff!”

New world snooker champion Stuart Bingham, from Vange, was among the crowd at Wembley as an invited guest of Football League sponsors Sky Bet. He tweeted: “Not every day you get to see this!

Wow, what a night! Got in the royal box to watch the celebration ten feet away from the players!”

Comedian Terry Alderton also shared a photo of himself on his way to the match on Saturday, wearing a Southend replica shirt.
