Picture from the past: Mulberry pontoon
THE section of artificial Mulberry harbour, which lies one mile off Southend’s Eastern Esplanade.
The concrete pontoon came adrift while being towed by a tug to the D-Day invasion beaches in June 1944.
Since this photograph was taken in July 1976, the harbour has deteriorated.
Moves have been made to get it declared a historic monument.
