A SOCIAL cub for over fifties has finally moved into its new home after a long wait.

Club 50 Plus, which provides day-time activities for about 200 people, has set up a new base above Toys and Tuck, in Queens Road, Southend.

The club was forced out of Margaret Thatcher House, in nearby Victoria Avenue, in the summer because the building was earmarked for demolition, The group was due to move into its new home in August, but this was delayed because of a legal wrangle between the landlord and Southend Council.

But the club is now inviting potential new members to view the new base from 10am today and tomorrow.

Jim Newton, acting deputy chairman of Club 50 Plus, said: “We are delighted to be installed in our new premises and are looking forward to meeting our current and prospective new members here as soon as possible.

“We urge anyone over 50 who is interested in finding out about the club to come and see us at the open days, or any weekday from Monday, February 2.

“We are very grateful for the support we have received in helping us move here.”

From next week, the club will be back in business every weekday, from 9.30am until 3.30pm, with games on offer including table tennis, snooker, dancing, keep fit, and tai chi.

Less strenuous activities include watercolour painting, crafts, and board games.

The club was previously housed in Queensway House, in Essex Street, but was forced to leave in April 2013 after the building was demolished by the former Conservative administration.

It temporarily moved to Margaret Thatcher House, behind the Civic Centre, but was yet again kicked out because of plans to tear down the tower block, which have now been shelved.

The club then found itself in limbo during the summer while the legal wrangle took place.

Labour’s Ian Gilbert, deputy leader of Southend Council, said: “Council staff members have worked very hard to support the club during a challenging time of change.

“This voluntary organisation is a lifeline of companionship to people while offering a whole range of absorbing activities for its members to enjoy.

“We wish everyone involved in Club 50 Plus all the very best in their new home.”
