PUPILS formed a human poppy to mark the centenary of the Royal British Legion’s appeal.

They took part in the event along with former Lance Corporal Ben Roberts, who served with the Royal Anglians, to mark 100 years since the poppy was first used as a symbol of remembrance and hope.

The appeal was launched at Mayflower High School, in Stock Road, Billericay, yesterday morning.

Headteacher Lee Brumby said: “We are immensely proud we have been chosen to help the Royal British Legion launch its annual Poppy Appeal in Essex, in such a memorable year, 100 years after the outbreak of the First World War.

“As a school, we are always delighted to show our unequivocal support for the work undertaken by the Royal British Legion by wearing our poppies with pride, helping us to help the British Armed Forces past and present and their families.”

Mr Roberts, of Chelmsford, said: “I suffer from post traumatic stress disorder and sometimes day-to-day life is a struggle, but I have benefited from not only a friendly face from the legion, but I have been sent on a Poppy Break, my first proper holiday in years.

“It has given me money and debt advice, helped me with a rent deposit and helped me to furnish my home to make it a safe and warm place to live.”
