A NEW service has been set up to help rough sleepers in the area, with more than 30 people thought to be sleeping rough in south Essex.

About 19 people are estimated to be sleeping outside in Southend alone, with the total number about 38 for the whole of the south of the county.

In response, the nine local authorities in southern and mid Essex have commissioned a service, St Mungo’s Broadway, a charity which provides help and shelter to rough sleepers.

In addition, the authorities have set up the South Essex Homelessness Assessment and Reconnection Team, which will have three full-time members working with volunteers to ease the situation.

The group is looking to set up bases in Southend and Basildon.

Rochford Council’s cabinet member for community, councillor Jo McPherson, said: “We really need to do all we can to help these people get their lives back on track. We are pleased to commission this service.”
