CONCERNS have been raised over a lack of building work taking place at the Grand Hotel in Leigh.

The hotel in Leigh Broadway has been undergoing a £4.5million revamp so it can be turned into a boutique hotel and spa.

Rumours have been circulating that work had ground to a halt and yesterday the Echo found the site had been closed off with no builders to be seen.

Mick Norcross, the former Towie star behind the hotel’s revamp, refused to comment to the Echo about the situation, but hinted that it would be ready for the scheduled opening date of winter 2015.

Caroline Parker, former chairman of Leigh Town Council, said: “I drove past there and there was no sign of any work going on and it did concern me.

“I know there has been work taking place this summer, but I could not see any sign of people there.

“I really hope something happens soon though otherwise I will have egg onmy face as I publicly had a lot of faith in him.

“Of course he won’t want anything to go wrong and tarnish his reputation either.

“I love that building and if I had the money, I would buy it myself just to save it.”

The project to revamp the iconic building will see 20 bedrooms, a piano lounge, bar, restaurant, tea rooms and luxury spa created.

However, it has been held up previously by subsidence and the invasion of Japanese knotweed.

Work eventually began in April, but yesterday, the Twitter account @everythingleigh tweeted: “Work has stopped on the Grand, #LeighonSea with no firm date for starting again.”

A Twitter account set-up by those involved in the Grand’s revamp has not posted any updates since the middle of July.
