ON Wednesday, September 10, the South Eastern Working Newfoundlands, will put their well trained dogs through their paces as they practice a Lake Rescue.

The event comes ahead of their public display at the Essex Country Show at Barleylands in Billericay on September 13 and 14.

Newfoundlands were originally ship dogs and with their webbed feet were trained to rescue sailors who had fallen overboard, as well as swim into harbours with guide ropes from Merchant Ships and even retrieve lost fishing equipment. With a history spanning centuries, they have immense strength combined with a gentle nature and of course, webbed feet.

The Newfoundland Lake Rescue will take place on Sunday, August 14, at the Essex Country Show and after showcasing their natural abilities, visitors will be able to meet the gentle webbed feet giants and give advice to any new pet owners.

Essex Country Show Manager, Jenny Sparkes said: “Dog shows and demonstrations are always an extremely popular attraction at the Essex Country Show. We are sure the Lake Rescue will be another big success”.

Dogs on Leads are invited into the Essex Country Show free of charge, there is a dedicated dog area located next to the lake. Other dog shows taking place this year by different dog groups include a carting demonstration and dog agility.

The Essex Country Show celebrates the best of rural Essex, past and present. Bringing together the very best arena events, demonstrations, attractions and exhibitions, it is now in its 28th Year. Show highlights for 2014 include a Monster Truck Car Crushing Show in the main Arena, Vintage Fun Fair and Peppa Pig appearing at intervals on both days.
