Southend Airport flights delayed by French strike
Updated 12:30pm Tuesday 24th June 2014 in Echo News
PASSENGERS at Southend Airport are facing severe delays to flights due to strike action by French air traffic controllers.
Flights to Spain and Portugal are facing the worst delays and some may have to be cancelled.
A spokeswoman said: "easyJet can confirm that like all airlines, it was required by the French DGAC to cancel 20 per cent of its flights across the network - from Lyon, Marseille Toulouse, Bordeaux, CDG and Orly today.
"There have been no cancellations at London Southend airport this morning however, due to the congested airspace over France we are experiencing considerable slot delays.
"At London Southend airport flights to Spain and Portugal are worst affected. Based on current delays there are likely to be cancellations this afternoon."
The airline is advising passengers to arrive at the airport as usual but be prepared for delays to some flights.
Travellers are also advised to check easyJet's flight tracker or easyJet.com for the latest information.
The strike, by SNCTA and Unsa-ICNA, the two biggest air traffic control unions, is expected to last until Sunday, causing delays and the threat of cancellations for the rest of the week.
The easyJet spokeswoman added: "Despite the fact that this disruption is beyond easyJet’s control we will do everything possible to minimise the inconvenience to our passengers.”
