Southend Airport flights delayed by French strike

Southend Standard: Grounded - easyJet flights to Spain and Portugal facing severe delays Grounded - easyJet flights to Spain and Portugal facing severe delays

PASSENGERS at Southend Airport are facing severe delays to flights due to strike action by French air traffic controllers.

Flights to Spain and Portugal are facing the worst delays and some may have to be cancelled.

A spokeswoman said: "easyJet can confirm that like all airlines, it was required by the French DGAC to cancel 20 per cent of its flights across the network - from Lyon, Marseille Toulouse, Bordeaux, CDG and Orly today.

"There have been no cancellations at London Southend airport this morning however, due to the congested airspace over France we are experiencing considerable slot delays.

"At London Southend airport flights to Spain and Portugal are worst affected. Based on current delays there are likely to be cancellations this afternoon."

The airline is advising passengers to arrive at the airport as usual but be prepared for delays to some flights.

Travellers are also advised to check easyJet's flight tracker or easyJet.com for the latest information.

The strike, by SNCTA and Unsa-ICNA, the two biggest air traffic control unions, is expected to last until Sunday, causing delays and the threat of cancellations for the rest of the week.

The easyJet spokeswoman added: "Despite the fact that this disruption is beyond easyJet’s control we will do everything possible to minimise the inconvenience to our passengers.”

Typical! It's summer...of course the French Air Traffic Controllers are going on strike! You can almost set your watch to this type of activity. Every year around this time. Should be ok for the trip to Schiphol later next month. Great picture...even the trucks can't get off the ground. Or is this Stobbarts Flight Replacement Service? (Did you know that if Stobbarts comes up with a wavy red line underneath in spell-check the only option given is Barstools)

If the planes are not flying, travel with Eddie Stowbart, millions of Eastern Europeans swear by it and you don't get hassled by immigration or customs.

We were delayed a couple of hours on the first flight due out yesterday. Excellent service by the crew on the plane and now at our destination.

Can someone explain why there were delays to the flights to Amsterdam? Surely there is no influence of French ATC's on that route. Does it enter French airspace? It doesn't look like it does.

Easyjet operate their fleet over several routes, the aircraft operating a flight heading for Amsterdam might need to operate to Spain first if this flight is delayed then it will have a knock on effect to the rest of the days flights scheduled for that aircraft. It would be far too expensive to have a dedicated aircraft for each route.
