Right hand turn ban will leave us cut off

RESIDENTS fear they will be left “stranded” if County Hall goes ahead with plans to block off a well-used road.

Essex County Council’s highways panel wants to ban motorists from turning right from Wash Road, close to the Dunton Road junction, on to Noak Hill Road, Noak Bridge.

The proposals will block off a popular route to the A127, and mean people living in Noak Bridge will have to divert through Laindon to get to Basildon town centre.

Essex County Council has drawn up the scheme because the site is deemed dangerous, after five accidents were recorded in the last three years.

Resident Peter Hartgrove, 79, of Queens Road, said: “It feels like the council is trying to shut us off. We’ll be stranded.

“As soon as there is a crash on the A127 everyone comes down Dunton Road, so we’re never going to get out. It’s going to cause a lot more problems.

“Five crashes in three years doesn’t even sound that bad to me. Surely there must be other roads which are more dangerous?”

Another resident, who did not want to be named, said the council should look at alternative traffic measures.

She added: “The turning is a bit sharp and I have seen a lot of near misses, so I can understand why the council wants to do something about it.

“I just think stopping us turning right completely is a bit extreme. Couldn’t they put in traffic lights or better signs, or even lower the speed limit.

“I’m surprised five crashes in three years is enough for the turning to be classed as an accident hotspot!"

Residents have been sent letters and are being asked to share their views on the proposals.

If the scheme was brought in, it would initially be for a trial 18 month period.

A spokesman for Essex County Council said: "The “left turn only” order is currently a proposal. The proposal is a result of a Casualty Reduction report.

They said: “Residents have been sent a reply sheet from the council to gauge responses.

After the consultation, all feedbackwill be reviewed and presented to the local highways panel, who will then decide on how to progress with the proposal.”

I think this is a great idea. Ive often thought that the current layout is dangerous, plus it casues huge tailbacks along dunton road where its simply impossible for cars to get onto noak hill road. Great idea, hope they implement ASAP

The new layout is the most absurd piece of planning they have ever come up with. It is just going to move the problem from the end of wash road through to the junctions the bottom of Willowfield etc. People will go over Willowfield and turn right (which they shouldn't) to get onto the A127 as the Wash Road junction is the easiest way for any of us in that area to get onto the London bound side of the Arterial.

It will also cause congestion at the bottom of the High Road (at the Fortune of War) because people will go that way to join the Arterial on the Southend bound side.

It will be pointless having a car if you are in the Kings / Queens estate, as you will never be able to get out of the area anyway !!

As a resident of the kings area I find the proposal completely ridiculous thus causing more problems in other areas. Why not simply add a mini round about or traffic lights to solve the whole problem. The turning has been a danger spot for years so we are all glad to hear news that it is up for amendment but a left turn only is not the answer here!!

This is Steeple View isn't it? I think you'll find everyone living in Noak Bridge can get to Basildon just fine.

IF people drove according to the conditions, AND read the signs properly, then there would be NO crashes. I have noticed where I now live, drivers are getting far TOO impatient, and want to get somewhere before they leave, but it simply doesn't work, so leaving a few extra minutes for any journey should suffice.

Stokes 90; Sesibollox; pembury53 and crowny if you (a) don't live in this area and (b) cant say anything constructive don't say anything at all....

To hundreds of people this is the road the live in and the area they choose to live, if you don't fall in either of the above and are one of the ignorant motorists that just pass through then keep your opinions to yourself....

As a resident, we have been battling for years with Highways to get the speed chicane moved on High Road North - because of safety issues! not for the sake of moaning! and recently to get the kebab van moved from wash road... maybe I should send him to the bottom of your road or even better outside your house... wonder how you'd feel then...

I salute you Mr Hartgrove for having a voice someone needs to! This area is lovely but the roads and motorists and more importantly the council let it down!

Have a lovely day - PS. Drive carefully!

We have been fighting for years to have the traffic chicanes removed in High Road North - for Safety Reasons not for the sake of moaning!

Recently our fight is to remove the kebab van that has taken up residence at the end of wash road.... I will send him to your road or outside your house and see if you like it!

Residents are continuously let down by the Council and Highways... Mr Hartgrove I salute you for having a voice! We need to speak up!
