New leader committed to ploughing money into Laindon and Wickford regeneration

First published in Echo News by

THE new leader of Basildon Council says he will make regenerating Wickford and Laindon top priority.

Phil Turner is committed to ploughing money into Wickford High Street and the dilapidated Laindon Centre.

He has given the go-ahead for contractors to revamp shopfronts in Wickford High Street to attract more visitors. Independant businesses will be given grants to upgrade facades so they can compete with out-of-town shopping centres.

The work, focusing on the heart of the town and Halls Corner, is expected to take 14 weeks.

Mr Turner also revealed he is in talks with BDO, administrators of the Laindon Centre, and hopes to see an application submitted shortly to regenerate the Sixties’ complex.

He has not ruled out using a compulsory purchase order to push the scheme forward, and is also considering including a patch of councilowned land in any future designs.

Mr Turner said: "Pitsea is on the way and it looks fabulous and Basildon town centre needs work, but Laindon and Wickford are the two biggest priorities in terms of regeneration.

Wickford has a great shopping area and so much potential.

“The problem with the Laindon Centre is the sheer amount of money it needs, so the administration is having to work out howmuch of a loss it can afford to make.

“I’ve got a community that has been waiting for something to change for years and that is what we are going to try to do.’’ David Harrison, Ukip councillor for Wickford Park, said: “Wickford needs more than tidying up a few shopfronts, but we will have to see what they look like. I welcome the fact Wickford is a priority. It has been for us for a long time.’’

On my last visit, I was truly DISGUSTED as to how diabolically appalling Laindon now looks and would NEVER move back, if I was given a place. This one Beautiful town should NEVER have had all the old shops and High Road School ripped down in the first place.

Thank GOODNESS for memories and old photo's I still have, as well as a jigsaw of how it was in the 1950's, that is displayed in my home.

As usual the doom mongers and armchair politicians swing into action. This new council has been in office for three weeks and have had to do the usual voting and deciding who does what in the midst of the usual flurry of cr@p from demented Fantasists R Us in the Labour group who have been insanely tweeting the most preposterous rubbish as per usual.

Whatever happened to judging further down the line when the council has had a chance to get things going, now it has a new internal landscape that thankfully keeps the nutters in the Labour group in their place. Perhaps now we might get something done but it nothing ever gets done overnight. And the more time Labour wastes in council meetings with pointless debate and ridiculous "motions" (I've flushed better "motions" down the pan), the longer everything will take to get done.

I suggest if folk aren't happy that a) they actually bother to vote, b) they don't keep repeating the same patterns and c) if they don't like it, they propose themselves as candidates. next time.

And not listening to the increasingly hysterical online rants from Labour might help because if you believe everything Cockroach and co say, you might as well believe the moon is made of cheese.

Labour turn everything into a pippy show. If they got on with serving and engaging with the public instead of endless publishing lles about anyone who dares to disagree with their fascist views, posturing and bandwagon jumping in newspapers, bandstanding, rumour mongering. and wasting public money on pointless "investigations", perhaps they'd have a grain of credibility.

Let's see further down the line if this council delivers and if they don't, I suggest folk get actively and legitimately involved instead of b1tching on here.

Ms Gandy you accuse Labour of wasting public money on pointless investigations.

You seem to have forgotten that dear Mayor wasted public money on an investigation as to who took a photograph of her in a public place - when incidentally she was representing the monarch - texting.
