A BABY at the centre of an ambulance service investigation into a slow response time has died.

The baby, from Chelmsford, died at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, having been transferred from Broomfield Hospital.

The tot had been taken on Monday, June 9, prompting its parents to dial 999 for an ambulance.

Two police officers were first on the scene following the call and one gave first aid to the baby, who had stopped breathing, before taking the decision to drive the child to the hospital.

The child was later transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital in a life-threatening condition until they sadly died on Thursday.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious, and a file has now been submitted to the county coroner.

An ambulance arrived 13 minutes after the initial emergency call, even though the service’s target time is eight minutes.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: “An ambulance was immediately dispatched, but the police officers who were first on scene took the decision to take the baby straight to hospital.

“An ambulance arrived at the address 13 minutes after the 999 call was made. An investigation has been launched into the whole process around the incident itself.”

Information has yet to be released the baby’s gender and age.
