A SUPER dog who transformed the life of her owner has bagged another award.

Cocker spaniel Molly was handed the Dogs Today prize during a ceremony at the London Pet Show, in Earls Court – just two months after winning a prestigious award at Crufts.

Owner Lucy Watts, 20, of Swans Green Close, Thundersley, is battling with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a rare tissue disorder which has left her wheelchair-bound since she was 14.

She felt isolated and lacked confidence before she met Molly in March last year.

Her condition means she struggles with dressing, sitting unaided, and she has to be fed through a tube. Molly is now on hand to help with everyday tasks. She can pick up items, alert someone if Lucy needs help, and even tidies away her own toys. Lucy said: “We bought Molly home when she was eight weeks old and she has completely changed my life.

“I live in chronic pain and most days are a struggle for my body, but last summer with Molly was the best especially when we went for walks.

“She doesn’t judge me and she has broken down the barriers between the able and disabled for me.”

Molly is being fully-trained by Dog Assistance in Disability.

She will soon be able to fetch named items, pass the phone, help with dressing and undressing, load and unload the washing machine.

Sandra Fraser, from the organisation, said: “We are delighted Molly has been recognised with this prestigious award.

“Both Lucy and Molly are working incredibly hard with their training, made even tougher due to Lucy’s health issues.

“It is very empowering for a person with disabilities to play a significant role in training their pet dog to become their four legged carer.”

The Dogs Today award recognises a pet or person who has done something remarkable or inspirational.

Molly was rewarded with a sterling silver medal made by contemporary jewellery designer Helen Noakes, and a year’s supply of James Wellbeloved dog food.

In March, Molly beat dogs across the country to be named the 2014 winner of the Crufts Friends for Life award, during the event at Birmingham’s NEC.
