A HISTORIC pub is to undergo a £180,000 makeover, creating seven new jobs.

The Paul Pry, in High Street, Rayleigh, closed its doors on Saturday for an extensive refurbishment.

The pub, part of the Spirit Pub Company, will reopen on Friday, June 13, just in time for England’s first World Cup match.

As part of the investment, the pub, built in Tudor times, will receive a complete makeover, “bringing a fresher, brighter feel to the pub, complete with contemporary fixtures”.

However, there will be no structural changes and it will be in keeping with the history of the pub, with new chesterfield sofas and new flooring.

The drink and food menus will also be revamped to include local real ales, fresh produce and Sunday roasts. A specials board will also offer unique seasonal dishes.

Chris Mackenzie, general manager at the Paul Pry, said: “The investment will be a great boost to the pub and the local area. My team and I are very excited about the changes – especially the new food and drink additions – and hope our guests will be too.”

The name Paul Pry originates from an 1823 play by John Paul – Paul Pry being cast as a busybody, unable to mind his own business. The name stuck and has applied to eavesdroppers and busybodies ever since.

The pub has two bars on different levels. The downstairs area with its TV welcomes children whereas the upstairs bar has a number of TV’s popular with sports fans, who can watch matches on Sky.

The pub also has a beer garden, which has seating for 120 people.

Mr Mackensie is hoping to recruit new staff to work front of house as well as in the kitchen. He said: “I am on the look-out for enthusiastic, hard-working individuals who want to join our fantastic team at the Paul Pry.”
