CAMPAIGNERS want a judicial review to stop Rochford District Council build 2,785 homes in the next 15 years.

The call comes from a meeting of the Rayleigh Action Group meeting where more than 500 people turned out to show their displeasure at the plans.

The group would now need to raise £30,000 in less then a month to fight the housing plan, which were officially adopted by the council two weeks ago.

Chairman of the group, Linda Kendall, is a long-time campaigner against the plans, has appealed for help to raise the cash and fight the plans.

She said: “We have to submit for a review before April 8 and we are appealing for people to come and help us.

“I have been told a review would cost around £30,000 and we also need help on the official reports.”

Campaigners argue the public were not adequately consulted in the development of the plans, and that new homes will lead to congestion and an increased risk of flooding.

Southend Standard:

Jim Cripps, Linda Kendall, Chairman of RAG, John Smith OBE and Peter Scott

Chris Black, Liberal Democrat district councillor for Downhall and Rawreth, voted against the plans and attended the meeting at the Mill Hall in Bellingham Lane, Rayleigh.

Residents were, in part, notified of the plans by the Rochford District Matters free quarterly newspaper, but Mr Black argued that was not enough.

He said: “I am concerned about Rayleigh and I know a lot of my residents are very angry.

“Very few people knew about the plans through the council’s efforts. Many people do not even open that newspaper.

“While the allocations document was being produced there was not one public meeting.”

Exhibits of the plans can be seen in libraries across the district.

The developers, Countryside, have published plans for 475 new homes to the west of Rayleigh at westofrayleigh.co.uk

Good luck to them, but they're wasting their money. Even if they win this fight, the council/government will still build more homes.
In thirty years time, this whole area will just be another London Borough, with the odd park instead of green belt.

If everyone in the Rayleigh/Rochford area put in a pound then that would cover the money required for the review and anything left could be put towards a celebration party! The residents of Rayleigh need to show their support for the action group now, otherwise it's going to be too late for your objections to have any meaning!

Oh the free Rochford Council newspaper that I and many others didn't receive. The pleasing thing is that many of the councillors will be voted out and no Tory councillor will dare canvass parts of Rayleigh - we have long memories.

Vote the Tories back in on May 22nd.. get more of the same. That will be the price of keeping Rayleigh blue.

And I hear the handwringers cry "who do we vote for".

As soon as the candidates are posted, that's when you decide. You see what they all offer and then hold them to it. There will be independents and UKIP.

The only way we have a chance is for everyone in Rayleigh to get involved don't just mourn about it actually do something and join the fight against the undemocratic Rochford Council's plans for how these houses are going to be built and where, also NO to the Gypsy/travellers site. As feelings are strong about these plans going ahead it is clear that the residents have been completely ignored. I hope at the next council elections voters DO NOT vote CONSERVATIVES with their cabinet regime.

The proposals were slipped in under the radar and most people found out to lare for effective opposition

these new builds will do nothing to address the housing shortage (locally) as so many simplistically seem to think..... they will be bought mainly by londoners, cashing in on the soaring value of their properties, in turn more affluent foreigners move in to the places they vacate...... the net result of all this local build will be population growth, horrific overcrowding, road congestion, and an ever greater divide between london and surrounding areas, which simply become full of ex londoners...... not a prediction, already happening.....

Why "NO" to the Traveller sites?

Can you say why Travellers are not entitled to council accommodation?
When they fork out and pay their fair share of everything and do an honest day's work, they will be "entitled".

People are not automatically entitled to council accommodation. You seem to forget that with "rights" come "responsibilities". And people who live in council properties are obliged to live in such a way that does not affect the rest of the community adversely.

And you also forget that time and time again THESE PEOPLE HAVE TURNED DOWN COUNCIL ACCOMMODATION ON THE GROUNDS THAT IT'S "AGAINST THEIR LIFESTYLE".

How thick ARE you? Do you EVER listen? They themselves have turned down council accommodation. Did you get that? THEY turned down council houses offered by Basildon.

What about the people of Basildon who have been on the housing list forever?

The only exception was the homes in Wolverhampton they were renting and sub letting until it was uncovered by Jon Austin of the Echo.

I have a long memory for this and more knowledge of it, whereas you are just a reactionary leftist nutter. I was a governor at Crays Hill school and proactive in the village when I lived there. I SAW and HEARD what went on in the school and the community. YOU did NOT. I have also had talks with these people both on and off air - as did other members of the Crays Hill community - with the end result that they just carried on doing as they pleased anyway. Against the law. And getting away with what the rest of us could never hope to do.

Any council accommodation should be available, first and foremost to those who have lived in the district and paid their taxes here for a long period of time. Not a bunch of council tax dodgers, who allow their horses to roam on the carriageway, endangering lives and as at Dale Farm, carry on illegal businesses selling dodgy sofas and doing their dodgy driveways and other illegal activities. ALL THIS and more has been reported by the Echo and other newspapers and is even the subject of a book. Which you would know if you EVER bothered to do your research instead of constantly attacking people on here who are better read than you.

Ask the local shops and businesses what THEY think of another traveller development.

Oh and ASK THE ENGLISH AND ROMANY GYPSIES NEARBY what they think as well... will you be calling them "racists" when they give you THEIR opinions.

Not to mention the fact that they are still at Oak Lane ILLEGALLY and spending even more of our public money on endless judicial reviews.

These people have done nothing but take take take. It is THEY who decide their lifestyle nobody else. NOBODY has inflicted it on them. They have been given endless choices and have all these @rselicking, vote-seeking leftie politicians queueing up to offer their services, including the "Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service", based at Crays Hill school at a cost of £440,000 to the taxpayer AGAIN - and which so far has "achieved" nothing, except a website with rows and rows of meaningless percentages on it all relating to "racist incidents".

But of course it conveniently ignores the plight of those who are stumping up for this out of their local taxes and who are NOT , it seems, entitled to the same "human rights".

Instead they are obsessed with "racism" and conveniently ignore all the things that have been said, done and perpetrated against the settled community by the travellers. Ask Len Gridley what life is like in the front line. And before you start on him, he has a traveller for a brother in law. But one that has been in the area a long time and keeps himself to himself and doesn't expect handouts.

And they expect the rest of us to pay for it. And so it goes on.

Well, we do not have an endless cheque book and do not want to see this whole debacle repeated again. Legal site it may be but it will soon turn into a free for all.

You have NO experience of living next to an illegal traveller development, NO knowledge of the FACTS and NO experience. You just spout your usual leftwing drivel. Everybody else is a racist - and you are a self appointed saviour. You have NO IDEA of the effects of a large "traveller" development on a community.

The activities at Dale Farm have been widely reported and have cost the people of Basildon millions upon millions.

If these people had gone about things properly, securing a site with proper planning permission, observed all the usual rules, funded it themselves out of legitimate earnings (and they DO have the money for such enterprises), blended into the community, found decent jobs and paid their taxes and kept themselves to themselves, nobody would have a problem.

But it draws attention to one glaringly obvious factor THEY ARE NOT TRAVELLERS , THEY DO NOT TRAVEL. You're either a traveller or you're settled. You cannot do both.

A member of my family is starting a family and looking for somewhere to live. She and her other half earn their own living and are starting from scratch, with nothing except the clothes they stand up in. There is no network of local do gooders lining up to help them. And they certainly won't be able to just set up home in the nearest field without planning permission.

The English and Romany gypsies in the Dale Farm area were all pushed out to the perimeter when these people descended on Crays Hill. Have you ever bothered to consult them? I suggest you get off your butt and go and actually SPEAK to ALL the people affected including the local gypsies who have lived here for decades.

And here you are talking of their "entitlement". They are entitled to nothing. Not when there are decent people in this district, hardworking people who have been made redundant, people who are homeless through no fault of their own and people on low incomes and who work damned hard for it.

You talk about "entitlement" as if it is everybody's God given right. Well it's not. Most of us have to work and pay taxes in order to be "entitled" to anything. Especially a home. WE earn our "entitlements".

Local people, both settled and traveller, come first, not a bunch of chancers who seem to have the loony left of the County Council and even more out of touch leftie loons in central government on their side.

You want em... you have em. Find a field adjacent to your property and invite them to live on it.

Until then shut up.
