Youths are ignoring shabby skate park

Inadequate Leigh skate park

Inadequate Leigh skate park

First published in Echo News

MONEY could be spent refurbishing a skate park after complaints from residents skateboarders were damaging benches and railings elsewhere.

Young people are turning away from Leigh skate park, locals have said.

Residents claim benches have been damaged in public areas and police have had to be called to move on youngsters.

Skateboarders are said to be going elsewhere due to a lack of facilities in the skate park and fears over safety.

Jamie Wilson, 38, who runs the Switch Skate shop, in Elm Road, Leigh, said: “If you want to stop kids skating in the streets, you need to put the stuff theywant at the skate park. At the moment the park is on a slope and it hasn’t been thought out very well.

“There have also been some problems with people hanging around in the park for the wrong reasons, taking drugs and drinking, which puts younger children off.

“Most of the people I work with are much younger, with the eldest being about 11 or 12.

“I’ve been to LA and seen that all the dads go down with their kids and make it into a social occasion – even bringing barbecues, because they’ve created facilities for them as well. The fact they’re there also acts as a deterrent for antisocial behaviour.”

Mr Wilson added a BMX track and ball park behind the skate park were infrequently used and could be utilised to expand the skate park, which also suffered from having inadequate room.

Leigh Town Council is now looking into releasing funds to improve and possibly expand the skate park to create a more family friendly environment.

Town councillor Caroline Parker said: “Youngsters skate along the streets, kerbs and benches, which have been damaged in town, so the idea is to create a ‘street scene’ in the skate park.

“But if that happens I would recommend the area to the side of that could provide somewhere for the little ones to play too.”

The town council voted last Tuesday to defer any decision on the skate park while proposals for other projects were submitted.

Don't give them any ideas, you will probably end up with a massive queue of councilors wanting to go on a "fact finding" trip to there.

The thing with skate parks however good they are is that skaters get bored and wish to go explore and skate other areas, which is what skating is all about, exploring the local area and making use of jumps, steps, benches, etc..it cant really be sanitised and contained within a small area, especially one thats as limited and a bit naff like Leigh skate park.

I wonder how many skaters are actually consulted when these parks are planned ? If they tried asking those that use them they might not get bored so quickly.......

This Skatepark, along with other services are long overdue upgrading and maintenance. Last time i used Leigh park there were dangerous lips due to subsidence of the concrete ramps and the bowl flooded due to inadequate drainage. Had the land substructure been properly prepared?

I do not agree it is a poor park, for its size it provides enough scope and routes. During the weekend and holidays it can get a little dangerous due to the amount of people trying to use the facility.

Obviously things must improve to keep interest in the sports disciplines and provide somewhere for our youth to go.

I propose this site needs the following to make it truly a skatepark to be proud of:
1. adequate vandalism proof lighting preventing dangerous black spots on the ramps. suggest lights out 2300-0000.
2. remove vert ramp (this was never correctly designed) and install one with the correct slope geometry.
2. remove very poorly implemented bmx track and rarely used football court (poor surface)
3. extend the now maintained and improved skatepark out to these areas, consulting the local scooter, skateboard and bmx riders, including experts such as Switch Skateboard shop fully in the process.
4. provide a small, safe cafe area like Canvey Skatepark with outdoor seating a toilet and areas for riders to go during bad weather or for resting up. Canvey Waterside park also provides free gaming consoles which are popular and prevent boredom setting in (well done Canvey!). An ideal position is on the park boundary opposite Leigh Recycling Centre entrance, alternatively seek expansion onto the overgrown land at the back of the park heading towards Two Tree Island or between park and maintenance area of C2C railway car park.
5. weekend St.Johns Ambulance support, alternatively employ a weekend park warden who is fully trained for First Aid, they can also build rapport with the riders, keep an eye on the general condition of the Park and attend to any issues with vandalism.
6. to keep riders using the park you could incentivise them, possibly with a rewards system/ card i.e. free cafe purchase with 5 or 10 consecutive visits while wearing protective equipment, thereby attempting to retain usage and prevent street riding, which i agree can cause a lot of damage and danger to riders and public alike.

i could go on but probably out of space.

A lot of the skateboarders on the streets aren't kids but grown men!

These appear to be the worst culprits: http://vimeo.com/873

They call themselves the LIK DOWN crew, and seem hell bent on bringing our beautiful town into disrepute by destroying all the benches and railings with their effortless style.

That's probably because he was a sh1t skateboarder.
he cut it off on the railing, nevertheless if he is a rubbish rider, skater or scooter rider its a death trap.
