Is this how the free-flow toll system at the Dartford Crossing will look?

An artist’s impression of how the layout could look once free-flow has been introduced in October has been released to the Echo.

The new remote payment system will come into effect later this year, at which point construction work will begin to remove the toll booths and install the new road layout.

The work is due to be completed in spring 2015.

The free-flow system means drivers will no longer have to pay charges at the barrier as they cross.

Instead, payment will be taken remotely by methods including via text message and online.

Traffic control measures including traffic lights will be used on approach to the tunnels at the crossing.

A spokesperson for the Highways Agency said work at the crossing is being planned carefully to minimise disruption to motorists.

They added: “The Dartford-Thurrock river crossing is a vital transport link and the Government is committed to reducing congestion at this crucial gateway both now and in the future.

“We are introducing newer technology and changing the road layout. The scheme will be launched during October 2014. The exact date is still to be confirmed.”
