A PEDESTRIAN underpass has been closed after a teenager received facial injuries in an early morning assault.
The underpass at the roundabout where Southchurch Road meets Queensway, Southend, has been closed following the assault, which was called in to Essex Police just after 1.30am.
Ambulance crews took the 19-year-old victim to Southend Hospital where he remains, receiving treatment for facial injuries.
Pedestrians have been advised to use the underpass rather than risk crossing the roundabout.
A police car and one officer is currently on the scene, ensuring no-one goes underneath the police tape into the underpass.
Motorists should be aware that pedestrians have been seen using the Southchurch Road roundabout to cross the road.
A police spokesman said: "Queensway underpass is currently cordoned off by the police following an allegation of assault.

"Police were initially contacted by the ambulance service following reports that a man had been assaulted near the underpass and found a 19-year-old local man with a facial injury.
"An initial account has been obtained from him though he is continuing to receive medical treatment so police are waiting to speak to him again in order to fully understand what happened."
