CLASSIC cars are to become a regular sight on Southend seafront as part of new monthly rallies.

Up to 20 enthusiasts who bring their beloved pre-1970 vehicles to display in designated areas of City Beach, will each be entitled to a free breakfast in a seafront restaurant, sponsored by seafront traders.

The dates are Sunday March 30, April 27, May 25, June 22 and September 28.

Southend Council’s councillor for culture and tourism, Derek Jarvis, said: “Vintage vehicles create interest for all ages. They spark memories for people who may remember some of these motors in their heyday, and are also a great chance for those who have only glimpsed such cars in films, to be able to see them in their well-preserved glory.”

Members of South Eastern Vintage and Classic Vehicle Club are taking part in the second date which coincides with National Drive It Day, run by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs.

This annual event commemorates the 64 cars that left London on a 1,000-mile trial in April 1900, and encourages owners of classic vehicles to get them up and running and out on the road.

In addition, South Eastern Vintage and Classic Vehicle Club is staging its 21st anniversary London to Southend Classic Vehicle Run on Sunday, July 13 Roger Petheram, who is organising the London to Southend run, said: “In the Fifties people used to come in their cars with a picnic to the seaside, so this annual event is a way to try and re-create that.

“These days we start off from Fairlop Waters in Barkingside and drive along a 50-mile route through the green lanes of Essex to Southend seafront. This run is open to any vehicle over 25 years old and other vehicles of special interest.”
