CCTV has been released after a man was glassed on a c2c train as it travelled between London Fenchurch Street and Shoebury

The victim, a 44-year-old man from Stratford, was left needing stitches after the horrific attack at Grays.

British Transport Police (BTP) detectives investigating the incident have released two pictures.

Officers, who appealed for information earlier this month, seized the onboard camera images of a man they are keen to speak to about the incident, which took place on Saturday, 28 December.

Detective Constable David Bishop, the investigating officer, said: “Whilst on board the 8.50pm Fenchurch Street to Shoebury service, the victim, a 44-year-old man from Stratford, began to engage in a conversation with another passenger.

“At first the conversation between the two men was amicable, with the victim sharing a drink with the man.

“The conversation turned hostile however and, as the victim stepped back to move away, the man used the glass he was holding to hit the victim on the back of the head.”

Both men left the carriage as the train arrived at Grays station, around 9.25pm, where the suspect ran off. Police were called and the victim later attended hospital where he was treated with stitches for the wound.

DC Bishop added: “Our enquiries have been ongoing and, after viewing CCTV from the area on onboard the train, we have today released a still of a man we are very keen to speak to.

“The CCTV images are very clear and I’d urge anyone who may recognise the man, or who may have witnessed what took place, to come forward.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 quoting incident number LNA/B6 of 30/12/2013.

Information can also be passed to the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Ahh yes this classy suspect drinking from a glass stolen from the last place he was in..., how can he be allowed to walk around and board a train with a glass of lager without being challenged by staff..? and why would anyone want to engage in a conversion with him.

No wonder he looks like that if he has been on the Stella.

Just the vile face of Britain after years of rule by lefties. We had 13 years of Labour soft soap and "go easy on the poor old criminals they've had a bad upbringing" attitude and the Tories have proved to be no better.

What we need is a hardline government in power with a zero tolerance attitude to crime - and particularly violent crime.

While ever we have the mindset that the perpetrators need counselling and prisons with gyms and widescreen TVs, we will continue to see this sort of behaviour. Victims in this country are often too scared to speak up - or if they attempt any kind of self defence or retribution they are the ones who get locked up. It's all a*** upwards.

There really is no proper deterrent in this country any more.

And why has it taken this long to get this image in the local paper. What on earth are the police doing? This should have been released within hours of this incident.

Increasingly these images are being released weeks after the event.

These people need to be jumped on straight away and when this filth is caught, that arrogant look wiped straight off his face by some seven ft brick sh**ouse copper..

Drinking on a train should be frowned upon like drink driving...all found guilty of drink driving should have their licences removed permanently and receive 3 years in prison for the first offence...the havoc these loony's can cause is well worth the sentence.

A disabled man was verbally abused on this service very recently when he went to visit at Benfleet. Suspect was still on the train and travelling westbound,
The disabled guy was just waiting to get off the train at the next stop and was just standing there by the door, when a YOB leaned through from the next carriage and hurled a massive amount of obscenities at the disabled guy (who was a well built guy) for now reason why don't BTP patrol the service more? Why didn't I say something to help the poor guy at the door? because it was me stood there unable to do anything about it C2C have a duty of care for their customers maybe if C2C were sued then maybe they would patrol this horrible service!!!! The response from ticket office staff? guess, here you go sir here's the number for the POLICE you have to ring the yourself. So I did guess where the call landed? would you believe blinking Cardiff for gosh sake. BTP reply do you want to speak to victim support !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel safer on my mobility scooter in the road than I do on that service..........

Almost every time I use this train service I am appalled at the level of behaviour on it. I can walk the street of Soho at 3am and not feel as threatened as I do back here. It's so depressing.
