ROADS could be named after war heroes as part of new plans to honour servicemen and women.

Basildon Council is asking former and serving members of the Armed Forces to have their say on its plans, which include a commitment to commemorating the centenary of the First World War.

Other centenary plans include:

  • Negotiating with businesses to provide interviews and discounts to former members of the Armed Forces
  • Providing a drop-in service where former members of the Armed Forces can get expert advice
  • Working on a history project with schools in Heiligenhaus, Germany, and Meaux, the council’s twin towns.

Terri Sargent, Basildon councillor responsible for community services, is a member of the council’s civil/military partnership board and is working on schemes which acknowledge the sacrifices made by service personnel.

Mrs Sargent, said: “We organised an Armed Forces Day in June last year, signposted support for veterans and future plans include naming streets on new housing developments after our fallen local heroes.

“This summer, we are looking to commemorate the anniversary of the First World War and are working with community groups to organise events across the borough.

If anyone can help with this, officers at the council are available to work with you to develop the ideas that you have.

“ I’m confident that together we can make this the most memorable Armed Forces experience.”

In 2011, Basildon had almost 100 serving personnel in the regular forces as well as countless more who are veterans of overseas conflict.

In addition, there are believed to be a substantial number of reservists living in the community.
