SOUTHEND United fans hoping to catch the highlights of Saturday’s FA Cup win over Millwall were nearly left disappointed after the ITV cameraman went to the wrong ground.

The cameraman was supposed to be filming the Blues’ comprehensive 4-1 win over Championship side Millwall, but ended up at the St Mary’s stadium in Southampton.

Fortunately for Shrimpers’ fans the blunder was recognised and a replacement cameraman was found just in time, meaning the game still appeared on ITV’s Saturday night highlights show.

Southend’s media manger, Tom Biggs, said: “It would’ve been a shame for our fans who couldn’t get to the game to miss seeing highlights because of it.”

The farcical situation, in an afternoon which also included a 15- minute delay to the game because of floodlight failure, arose when Mr Biggs received a call from ITV, complaining their cameraman could not get access to Roots Hall.

Mr Biggs called reception and was told no one from ITV had tried to get in, so rang the cameraman himself, who said he was standing with a steward outside the ground.

Mr Biggs said: “I spoke to the steward and was pretty blunt with him, but eventually he said he was in Southampton and everything clicked into place.”
