Dog therapy to help rehabilitate ex-offenders

Southend Standard: Dog therapy to help rehabilitate ex-offenders Dog therapy to help rehabilitate ex-offenders

DOG lovers are being asked to volunteer for a new scheme to help rehabilitate ex-offenders.

The Essex probation service is looking for people to act as buddies to ex-offenders by providing “animal therapy”.

Volunteers, accompanied by a probation officer, will work alongside their buddy to help walk, groom and play with dogs awaiting rehoming.

For more information, contact Ann Gill, at Castle Point Association of Voluntary Services, on 01268 638416 or e-mail ann.gill@castlepointavs.org.uk

It would be a cold day in hell before I would volunteer my beloved dogs to go within a mile of scum like that.

Send them out with a scoop and a load of bags and get them to pick up all the dog crap left behind by irresponsible dog emptiers. That might help rehabilitate them....

I think it is more likely that probation workers rather than officers will normally do the accompanying - most probation officers are VERY busy and unlikely to be actively involved throughout, despite setting up and overseeing such a project.

For one thing these are people who are volunteering with dogs that need re-homing so they are not anyones personal pets.
And this is a scheme that has been tried out in some European countries with good results.

Dogs are good therapy for anyone, everyone knows that, they are always pleased to see you no matter what, and are unjudgemental, unlike many humans !! l wish all the best for this project, it can`t do any harm and will in all possibility do a lot of good, which is a good thing not a bad.

Surely the most important thing here is to reduce their chance of re-offending, and if it has had good results in Europe it has to be worth a try doesn't it?

Ignorant and a cynic, the uk is full of them, nasty, spiteful, revengeful people, who scoff at anything new or even evidence that things work, which this has done in Europe,
lt`s almost as if people like that don`t want it to work, going with that mentality we`d still be sending little boys up chimneys wouldn`t we.

And there is NO evidence corporal punishment works, or prison. Prison has it`s fair share of recidivists, and in schools, it was the SAME children who were being caned that kept being caned, it DOESN`T work, and your views are definitely NOT worth knowing!! Sarcastic and ignorant.
