SOUTHEND Mayor Brian Kelly will spend Christmas at home after being discharged from hospital.

Mr Kelly, a councillor for Southchurch ward, praised the ambulance service and Southend Hospital after he was taken ill at home two weeks ago.

Echo:

He has been unable to attend functions and other civic duties since.

He said: “I’d like to thank the hospital and the ambulance service for their prompt action.

“It was three am when my wife dialled 999 after I had breathing difficulties.

"They cured those in the house.

"By the time I got to hospital, the crisis – if there was one – was over.”

Mr Kelly added that after a week-and-a-half in hospital, doctors decided the condition wasn’t as serious as first feared, and he was discharged last week.

He will have an operation early in the New Year to insert a stent, but expects to resume civic duties within weeks.

Andrew Moring, councillor for corporate services, said: “We all hope he gets better soon and our thanks go to deputy mayor, Chris Walker, for stepping in at such short notice."
