THREE remarkable brothers have decided to give up their Christmas presents to help the vulnerable and elderly.

Youngsters across the country are looking forward to opening lavish gifts of the latest toys, computer games and must-have clothes.

But for Tom Harber, 13, younger brothers Brendan, ten, and Benjamin, nine, this year will be about giving to those less fortunate.

They were inspired to do so after reading in the Echo how Paul Croucher, owner of the Roadhouse Diner on the A127 at Wickford, was opening up his restaurant to offer a free three course Christmas feast for people who would otherwise spend the day alone.

Tom, Brendan and Benjamin have decided to give up their £450 present allowance from Father Christmas and their parents to buy gifts for the 50 guests at the meal.

The brothers, of Ruthven Close, Wickford, will also spend the big day helping Mr Croucher and his family serve food and drink. Proud dad Sean, 42, said: “I sat the boys down and asked them when they thought they might be old enough to go without presents, and they all said they were ready this year.

“I was quite surprised, especially as Benjamin is still so young.

“I have always encouraged them to do stuff for charity, but I think this is really special, as it’s so close to home.

“They are starting to see people are really impressed with what they’re doing.

“The boys have been going around businesses in Wickford asking for donations. Their money won’t really go very far with 50 presents to buy – and they want to make sure everyone has something good.

“Christmas Eve is going to be a big wrapping fest at our house!”

Tom, a pupil a Beauchamps High School, in Wickford, raised £1,500 for charity earlier this year through a sponsored bikeathon and also joined his dad on a fundraising expedition to India.

The American-themed Roadhouse Diner, which opened just over a year ago, usually serves mega-sized meals, burgers, big breakfasts, ribs and hotdogs.

But on Christmas Day, Mr Croucher, from Rawreth, will turn his hand to traditional turkey with all the trimmings, thanks to generous donations from suppliers such as national chain Bookers and Bucklands at Pipps Hill, Basildon.

He said: “We have had so much support.

“It’s been fantastic and we’re really grateful.

“It really is amazing they want to make such a sacrifice.”
