Southend Standard: Parents anger as they are told head as quit by text Parents anger as they are told head as quit by text

PARENTS claim they have been left in the dark after a long-standing headteacher of a school in Wickford suddenly left halfway through term.

Just weeks after Ofsted inspectors deemed management at the Bromfords School as not doing enough to turn the school around, headteacher Marian Spinks announced her departure yesterday.

The Echo understands an email was sent to staff in the morning, while confused parents got a text message detailing a change at the helm later in the afternoon.

Ofsted officials who visited in the summer urged the school to make immediate improvements, and deputy head Martin Coulson has moved into the top job temporarily, to be supported by a team of “education experts”.

But a parent, who did not want to be named, said: “We were kept in the dark and I’m not happy finding out via our local newspaper when the parents should have been informed first.”

Another parent, who also wanted to remain anonymous, added: “The first I heard about it was on the Echo’s Facebook page. It would have been nice to know.”

Mrs Spinks is the second headteacher in the borough to leave in aweek, with Woodlands School in Basildon also having a reshuffle, as revealed in the Echo.

A statement from Essex County Council praised Mrs Spinks’ efforts in her four years at the school, but revealed that while the school will begin the search for a new head in 2014, it may be as long as September before someone permanent is in place.

The statement said: “Mr Coulson has taught at Bromfords for 20 years and is held in very high regard by staff, students and governors.

“Mr Coulson will not be acting simply as a caretaker, but will be working proactively to move the school forward.

“We are keen to ensure the school moves rapidly to an improved Ofsted assessment and are confident the changes we are making will ensure this will be achieved as quickly as possible. “ The team drafted in to help Mr Coulson are Richard Westergreen-Thorne, a retired headteacher with a track record in school improvement, and Christian Cavanagh, headteacher at Debden Park School, in Loughton.

“Mr Coulson will not be acting simply as a caretaker"! Well that's comforting...especia
lly on the wages he'll be getting!

Surly, the school should have proof read their phrasing...or does that just reiterate how standards have slipped at Bromfords?!

Sir Michael Wilshire last week warned “of a 'culture' of teachers tolerating misbehaviour and inattention in schools”! The Head of Ofsted, obviously had this Wickford 'circus' in mind, when making his poignant remarks!

When the going gets tough, the 'tough' get going - witness Basildon Academies, Woodlands and now Bromfords. The senior management let things get out of hand then can't face the inspection results. For god's sake get someone with 'b-lls' like Rory Fox was at the Academies - oh, I forgot,
the Chair of Governors and Sponsor didn't like his ideas, forced him to leave and have gone down the slippery slope again!

Sir Michael Wilshire is the cause of the deterioration in school standards by completely bullying excellent teaching staff as well as those who need improvement. He does this by changing criteria that are just starting to work from the last time he changed the criteria. He and Gove, his lapdog, are trying to make names for themselves. Wilshire so he gets his peerage and Gove so he can become Prime Minister, and they don't care who they damage on the way. It is time that parents truly support the teachers and turf out Gove and Wilshire. ............ and before criticising teachers get the facts first.

There continue to be no good schools in Basildon. Bromfords results are also pretty mediocre at GCSE level.

About time something was done about it. Parents should be pleased but some of the comments on here indicate parents don't get it.

Place the onus back on parents and their sons & daughters to achieve qualifications! Is it fair when teachers are criticised for students underachievement regarding GCSEs...despite the same pupils not attending school regularly, failing to complete set homework, choosing to miss 'boost' sessions, not possessing behaviour for learning or a positive attitude towards their education!

Ofsted is the problem, anyone who has had them in their school knows exactly what I mean. Family and friends of teachers know the truth of what the real Ofsted inspection are really all about.

I am not able to comment on the reasons for the sacking but I do know about common decency and this man should have been brought into the office to be told by his manager. who has obviously copped out. Shame on the school

The school has acted badly over the sacking, but then again, management of the school is obviously lacking given how the results are slipping year after year.

To those misguided souls on here who see Ofsted as the problem, you should be pleased Ofsted come round and pull the school to account for itself. The whole area suffers from extremely poor schools and something needs to be done about it. I cannot understand the continual whingers on these boards who are actually complaining about Ofsted. Absolutely unbelievable. Do you all want your kids to come out of secondary school only with mediocre qualifications of no use to getting a decent paid job in London, for example?
