A WOMAN is facing prison after admitting she washed her brother’s clothes after he allegedly stabbed his former partner.

Emily Sargent, 28, cleaned a pair of jeans belonging to Matthew Sargent, 29, before hiding them in her loft, a court heard.

She did not mention the potential evidence when she was interviewed by police.

Basildon Crown Court heard her brother turned up at her home in Ascot Grove, Basildon, to get his jeans washed.

His 33-year-old ex-girlfriend was stabbed in Osier Drive, Noak Bridge.

Following the attack, she was taken to Basildon Hospital before being transferred to a London hospital for treatment to serious head and facial injuries.

The court heard the victim cannot remember details of the stabbing, which took place on August 22.

Judge John Lodge warned Emily Sargent she should expect to be jailed as hiding evidence was a serious offence.

Addressing her, he said: “I’m adjourning your case because I want a pre-sentence report.

When your sentencing will take place depends on what happens with your co-accused.

“Getting a report and being given bail does not mean we are making any promises.

“Most cases of perverting the course of justice result in custodial sentences.”

Emily Sargent pleaded guilty to one count of perverting the course of justice.

Her brother is charged with attempted murder and intimidating a witness, but did not enter a plea when he appeared at Basildon Crown Court yesterday.

His next court date will be scheduled after a psychiatric assessment has been made.
