Market could be in new home by 2015

BASILDON’S new £5million town centre market should be open by early 2015, its operator says.
Basildon Town Centre Management has applied for planning permission to move the market from Market Square to St Martin’s Square and give St Martin’s Square a facelift at the same time.
The move will see St Martin’s Square redesigned, with new paving and decor to match the smart new image planned for the market.
If planning permission is granted, the operator hopes work can start on the project next spring, and be completed in early 2015.
South Essex College, which has plans to build a new base where the market is now, has agreed to pay Basildon Town Centre Management about £5million to take over the site.
This will be reinvested in the market move.
Town Centre Management’s Hans Wustefeld said: “With the town centre masterplan, there will be a superb change in Basildon over the next few years. This market will be stateof- the-art, and suitable for the requirements of customers nowadays.
“East End-style markets have had their day and are being replaced by more modern ones, which is what we are trying to replicate in Basildon.”
The new market will offer 31 large stalls, 21 smaller ones, and room for 30 other traders under gazebos. The market units will offer electricity and wifi internet connections.
A new market office and 27 parking spaces for traders will be created in the outdoor council car park next to the Basildon Centre.
Several trees will be felled in St Martin’s Square to make way for the market, with 22 new ones being planted in the redesigned square.
In August, more than 300 shoppers were surveyed about the proposals, with most supporting them.
