A TEENAGER has shown she has what it takes to cut it in the world of fashion by winning a tough competition.
Abbie Smith, 14, was announced the winner of the Basildon Fashion Awards at a glittering event at the Eastgate Shopping Centre.
The second annual competition was jointly organised by the centre, South Essex College and the Echo.
Abbie was one of three contestants who beat hundreds of entrants to make it to the final.
Along with fellow finalists Rosie Stowe, 15, from Shoeburyness High School and Katherine Pool, 17, from South Essex College, Abbie saw their sketches turned into designs and paraded on the catwalk.
The entries were marked by a panel of judges including former Towie cast member Amy Childs, who now runs a boutique at Eastgate.
Abbie’s dress design impressed the judges enough to win her a trophy, £250 to spend in Debenhams and a week’s work experience with the store’s personal shopper, Michelle Moore.
Mike Horton, from the Eastgate Centre said: “In just two years, the Basildon Fashion Awards have become a fitting celebratory tribute to the precocious fashion design talent of this area.
“We congratulate Abbie for her outstanding success and also congratulate Katherine and Rosie for theirs.
“All three wowed the judges with their designs at the gala evening.
“Eastgate is honoured to have been the venue to showcase the skill and creativity of these exceptional young ladies, all of whom could have a big future in the fashion industry.”
