Shoppers could be caught out by lack of loos

SHOPPERS risk being caught short because public toilets in Southend town centre remain out of order.
Four of the 11 conveniences off Tylers Avenue have been out of action for a week. Two of them were closed after vandals trashed them and two others need repairs.
Resident John Clark said: “There has been a big problem with drunks and drug addicts using the cubicles as it is, so with another four out of action people could be in trouble.
“I have seen a mother having to change her baby outside because the baby changing cubicle was occupied for so long by a drug addict. They prefer it in there because of the space and the folddown table.”
He said there had even been instances of addicts found collapsed in the toilets after overdosing.
Southend Council says there have been no recent complaints about addicts near the toilets.
A spokesman said: “Two toilets need routine maintenance, the other two are out of service due to vandalism “Other than that, there have been no recent complaints about antisocial behaviour connected to the toilets.
“The cleaning operatives are really vigilant and report any issues to the police.
“We have very robust policing of the toilet in Southend because it is a seaside and holiday destination.”
