AN MP has stepped in to try to improve a crumbling road leading to a scout campsite.

Stephen Metcalfe, Tory MP for South Basildon and East Thurrock, visited Kingston Ridge Scout Campsite for a tour of the facilities and to see first hand the issues with the road leading to the site.

The potholes in Lee Chapel Lane, in Laindon, have become so bad the road featured on a Channel 5 documentary last month about the worst roads in Britain.

Staff at the scout club have got so frustrated at the road surface they had resorted to filling them in the potholes themselves.

Mr Metcalfe, says he will raise the issue with Essex County Council.

He said: “This was my first visit to the campsite and I was extremely impressed by all that it has to offer.

“Unfortunately, large potholes and an uneven surface can leave users facing a bumpy ride before reaching the campsite.

“The road leading to the site does not reflect the quality found elsewhere and is in desperate need of some maintenance and repair, something I will take up.”

Mr Metcalfe added: “It is a shame that such a brilliant site has this issue with access and I look forward to working with them to find a solution to the problem.”
