Mum praises fire hero Kayla, 7, for raising alarm
A MUM has re-lived the moment her brave seven-year-old daughter told her their home was on fire.
Danielle Purvey and her two children, Brook and Kayla Henderson, may not be able to return home for three weeks following the blaze at Malyons, on the Felmores estate, on Sunday.
Quick-thinking Kayla, seven, who is a pupil at Felmore Primary School, was playing upstairs with friends when an electrical surge cut off the power.
Her mum, Danielle, was looking at the fuse box, when Kayla ran down the stairs shouting there was a fire in her sister Brook’s room.
Danielle, 33, explained it has been a tough few months for her family as her own mum had died this summer, but she was glad no one was hurt.
She said: “I thought she was joking, but she was really panicking. I told them to get out and go across the road to their friend’s house. I shut the bedroom door, called 999 and got my mum’s bird to safety.
“Kayla was really good. She was a little unsettled at first, but I think she was more worried about saving the bird.”
Firefighters were at the scene in just over five minutes and battled through thick smoke, which had filled the bedroom, to tackle the flames.
Kayla said: “We looked in my sister’s room and saw the flames. They were really big. We ran downstairs and told my mum. It was a bit scary.
“I was sad because I thought it was going to spread to the whole house.
"Now I am a little bit happier because everyone has been saying I was clever."
