Shut car park causing woe
11:30am Friday 11th October 2013 in Echo News
THE closure of a much-used car park is causing chaos for residents and traders.
Castle Point Council was renting the car park at the former Focus DIY store, in Tarpots, Benfleet, as free parking for shoppers and traders.
However, the car park was shut nearly two weeks ago while the owners of the former DIY store completed the sale of the unit to budget retailer Aldi.
The council said it was working to reach an agreement with Adli. However, the supermarket said the car park will remain closed until it meets with planners in around two weeks time.
Meanwhile, traders claim the lack of parking is turning customers away.
Melissa White, a stylist at a London Road salon, said: “With our women’s hairdressing it has not been too bad because they tend to make appointments so we warn them in advance the car park is shut.
“But is has impacted on the men’s side, they usually just come in and if they can’t park they go somewhere else.”
Mark Champion, of Rollin Stock, said drivers were parking in the access road between the former Focus DIY car park and the back of his store.
He said: “It is causing problems because customers have nowhere to park.
“Our deliveries are having trouble getting because people are parking in the access road.
“Now the sale has gone through, we just want the car park to reopen as quickly as possible.”
A council spokesman said negotiations with the new owners of the site are continuing.
