Rock 'n' roll night to raise cash for Wickford 95-year-old robbery victim
KIND-HEARTED rock ‘n’ rollers are staging a fundraising gig to raise the cash stolen from a 95-year-old grandmother who was attacked in her home.
The bands have all donated their time for free after being touched by the plight of frail Kathleen Jennings, who suffered facial bruising and a fractured pelvis at the hands of crooks.
The gig later this month is organised by husband and wife Linette and Spike Richardson who regularly host Rock ‘n’ Roll evenings in Chelmsford and Southend. Among those taking part are popular five-piece Julie Jive and the Big Shots.
Front woman Julie Lott, 36, from Hockley, said: “It’s just outrageous what happened to that lady.
“I just can’t believe anyone would do that to anyone, let alone a woman of her age, and in her own home, it’s just so awful.
“We’ve played in Wickford a number of times over the years and when we heard this gig was being organised, we wanted to be involved.
“The aim is to raise enough cash to replace the money that was stolen from her during the attack.
“All of the bands are waiving their fees and playing for free and it’s such a worthy cause.”
The band’s roadie Bob Bright, from Wickford, added: “There is such a community spirit in Wickford.
“Everyone has pulled together and just wants to help this lady.”
The pensioner at at her Wickford home when three crooks climbed a ladder to get inside.
They pushed her over, fracturing her pelvis and causing bruising to her face, before fleeing with her handbag, containing house keys, money and three rings.
The gig takes place at the Barn Hall Social Club in Alderney Gardens, Wickford, on Friday, October 25, from 7.30pm.
The Barnhall Community Association, which runs the club, will be donating one third of their bar takings to the fund as well as all ticket money. Local businesses have also donated raffle prizes. Tickets cost £3.
