School strikes: all the latest from south Essex
Updated 2:12pm Tuesday 1st October 2013 in Echo News
This live event has finished
- AS teachers go on strike today, we look at which schools have closed or partially closed and what impact it has had on parents.
From Echo Facebook: Terry Harris - My three year old is fine at home on his own. He is very good and after spending a whole day at work, I expect the kitchen tidied up with dishwasher unloaded and loaded, hoovering done, beds made .. And if he has time to cut the grass.
If they want pocket money, they need to learn how to earn it!
School closures - Futures Community College is closed.— @SouthendBC 01 October 2013
School closures - Prince Avenue Primary School is closed.— @SouthendBC 01 October 2013
From Echo Facebook: Mark Baker We live in a democracy. An essential part of living in a democracy is the right of the worker to join a union and, in extreme circumstances, withdraw his or her labour. We believe that the attempted destruction of the education system by Mr Gove meets this criterion. We are deeply worried about what is happening to it. Mr Gove - who has never been a teacher - has no interest in even discussing the issues with us. What else can we do? Just sit back and let it happen? This is a last resort. We deeply regret the inconvenience caused to members of the public but feel we have to make a stand.

School closures - Hinguar Community Primary School is closed.— @SouthendBC 01 October 2013
From Echo Facebook: Judith Webster - Can't believe parents moaning about teachers holidays. You can take your child out of school (maybe with a fine) during term time to take advantage of cheaper holidays Teachers can't. Most teachers I know spend at least two weeks of the summer holidays clearing up from last year and preparing for the next school year. Not to mention all the preparation they do during term time, after school activities, marking, and so on and so on. If you spread the hours they actually do over the year it would still put them over an average working week. The strike is because of changes to their terms and conditions of their pensions. So not something they knew about when they signed up.

Southend Trades Union Council: Message of solidarity to NUT members taking strike... http://t.co/wpxxuOmJkz— @ianfromsouthend 30 September 2013
Those who complain about strikes (fire, teachers, nurses ect) what would you do in their situation? Think about that before complaining— @choc_madness 01 October 2013
From Echo Facebook: Princess Tilley - They quick to moan if a child is off sick but yet they can take strike action so the child can not attend sch they have enuff holiday time strike then luckily my yr11 can still attend as she has exams coming up but what would happen if this option was not available i think its disgusting they all big about screaming how important education is but look in there eyes money comes above that strike in sch hols end off
So, the teachers are on strike (again). No doubt born out of greed. So who do I send the invoice for child care to? The union?— @ukldtrucker 01 October 2013
From Echo Facebook: Stacey Louise Reddings - My son has just started reception and day 2 they are on strike. It's bad they miss out on learning. My other son has to go Playgroup this afternoon still
From Echo Facebook: Terry Harris I have a question I hope the Echo can answer for me relating to this...
If a parent keeps a child at home from school during term, they get fined from the council.
Can we as parents who want to keep our children in school during term time claim compensation from the councils for letting the schools close? If not .. Why?
A DfE spokeswoman said: "It is disappointing that the NUT and NASUWT are striking over the Government's measures to allow heads to pay good teachers more."
A recent poll found that 61% of those questioned backed linking teachers' pay to performance - a key Government reform currently being introduced - she insisted, adding that the survey also found that majority of respondents were opposed to the walkouts or thought teachers should not be allowed to strike.
"All strikes will do is disrupt parents' lives, hold back children's education and damage the reputation of the profession," the spokeswoman said.
NASUWT general secretary Chris Keates said: "The overwhelming majority of teachers in four regions will be on strike today.
"Strike action is a last resort, teachers have been left with no choice but to demonstrate their anger and frustration in the face of their genuine concerns being dismissed and trivialised."
NUT general secretary Christine Blower said: "No teacher takes strike action lightly but the intransigence of this Education Sectary has left teachers with no choice.
"We cannot stand by and watch our profession be systematically attacked and undermined. There needs to be a change in the Government's attitude to teachers and education."
The Government has condemned the move, saying it is "disappointed" the unions have decided to strike.
The industrial action - the latest in a wave of regional strikes - has been organised by two of England's biggest teaching unions, the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the NASUWT.
From Echo Facebook: Amanda Clarke - Teachers get the most holidays in the work force and paid aswell, what is the problem!! The school day has'nt been increased or longer weeks etc so what is the problem? Maybe parents should go on strike for only getting 2 weeks holiday a year!!
Castle View School, the Deanes School and the King John School, both in Thundersley, and six of the district’s primary schools will be at least partially closed.
Almost all secondary schools in Southend and 11 of its primary schools will be at least partially closed.
From Echo Facebook: Amelia Howe - I am striking to maintain high standards of teaching and learning.
Most secondary schools have tried to keep classes running at least for pupils facing exams.
Bev Williams, headteacher of Belfairs Academy, Leigh, which will close to pupils in years 7 to 10, said: “This action is not against the academy itself but is part of national industrial action organised by these trade unions about changes to the pension schemes of their members.
“There is no requirement on unions to inform us of which members of staff will take action, and it may be that they will not know themselves as there is no obligation on members of unions to obey a strike call.
“Neither the governing body nor the principal is legally allowed to close the Academy 'in sympathy' with the strike. However, our main concern is the safety of our students.”
From Echo Facebook: Kelly Underdown - How can anyone begrudge and moan about teachers striking ... Ok it's a pain for us working parents but we all find ways to get around it .... These teachers spend more hours with our children in a day then we do , we trust them to take care of them, educate them why not strike if there is something they not happy with then they need to make a stand ..... Because I know I would not do there job for there money 30 kids for 6 hours, no thanks !!! All those parents moaning about missing out in learning here's a idea..... Home school them today teach them yourselves they your children your responsibility !
From Echo Facebook: Samantha Margan - Thorpe Greenways is open, but children may have different teachers. A letter was sent home last week.

Unions have no obligation to tell schools whether members will strike - with some only finding out this morning.
Some schools informed parents of closures over the weekend after teachers came out for or against action. Some schools have posted messages on their websites explaining what is affected.
