Bridge chaos: MP says new crossing must go outside Thurrock

Southend Standard: Jam – the bridge on Friday Jam – the bridge on Friday

AN MP has called on the Government to look again at plans to build a new Thames crossing to Southend or Canvey, after a security scare led to hours of delays at the Dartford crossing.

Jackie Doyle-Price, Tory MP for Thurrock, said Friday’s chaos, which saw motorists delayed for up to seven hours on the bridge and surrounding roads, showed the need foranew crossing east of Tower Bridge. Thousands of motorists travelling between Essex and Kent were caught up in the chaos on Friday, after a cylindrical device with wires was found on a Dover-bound coach.

A man was later detained under the Mental Health Act.

The Government favours another crossing cutting through the Thurrock countryside to link up with the M25.

However, Ms Doyle Price said: “Friday’s chaos proves there are not enough crossings east of Tower Bridge. When the Dartford crossing closes vast areas become car parks causing misery for motorists.

“It also illustrates the options under consideration are the wrong ones.

They would simply add to congestion on the M25 and the A13.

The Government needs to think again. A new crossing at Canvey offers the opportunity to link the M2 and the M11 and establish an outer ring road. Dependency on too few crossings brings real risk which costs our economy badly.”

“I have used the incident on Friday to ask the Government to look again at options D and E – a crossing at Canvey or at Southend.”

As much as i agree that another crossing is required i dont think Canvey is a good choice. The residents of the island already struggle to get on and off as it is and when there is an accident or incident the whole area including benfleet becomes absolutely gridlocked. As a former resident of Tilbury i understand the nightmare when things like the incident on the bridge last friday happen but as this area is not overly builtup (by this i mean tilbury is surrounded by alternative roads as is grays etc) its not too bad to eventually get home. Im now a resident of Benfleet and remember last winter when the pump failed at the bridge by benfleet station and the road flooded, the whole area simply could not cope. I know the crossing will need to go somewhere but the whole areas roads need a complete overhaul in order to do this, i for 1 would not be happy if it was built here but im just 1 person

I would think that if a new crossing was to be built at Canvey(or anywhere else)then the roads leading to it would be newly built and existing roads would be be upgraded.

Weren't we told a few weeks ago that numbers through the tunnel were down on 10 years ago? One isolated incident does not trigger a spend of billions.

"The man was detained under the Mental Health Act"... is that it? We don't get a picture of this person? Why? Surely there was CCTV footage? Why is this being hushed up? I would have thought this would have created a huge security furore and coverage in the press. I want to know more about why he was there and if this was a real bomb. I would like to know how long it took to apprehend him.

The details have been very sparse - always makes me wonder when information is withheld. I know where there are active court cases certain details are left out in case it prejudices a decision. But as a regular user of that bridge - and I WOULD have been there at that time under normal circumstances, I want to know the ins and outs.

Canvey, especially down by the Leigh Beck sea wall and old marsh areas are semi rural and still beautiful, being some if the only unspoiled areas left. We certainly do not want our island further spoilt by new roads and a bridge. We live here knowing and loving that it is an Island, not because it provides a quickie route to Kent.

A second crossing at Canvey would not have stopped what happened last week from happening. However, had there have been a second crossing close to the existing one then traffic could have easily been diverted via the second crossing and helped to alleviate the gridlock which occured because the traffic had nowhere to go.
