Police issue driving advice amid bad weather

POLICE have issued advice to motorists to only travel if necessary as wintry weather sets in.

By 10am today there had been 12 road traffic collisions reported to police in Essex since midnight and most of those do not appear to be weather related.

However further snow is expected today and conditions may deteriorate so police would advise motorists to only travel if necessary.

Officers advise making sure car lights are working and dirt, salt and snow is cleared away from lights.

Always ensure all windows are fully cleared of snow, frost and condensation before setting off on a journey and lear snow from the top of the car..

Keep windscreen washer fluid topped up as windscreens quickly become dirty from traffic spray and salt from the roads.

Make sure you have sufficient fuel for your journey and leave extra time.

Drive to suit the conditions - do not brake or change direction suddenly and look to anticipate changes in the traffic flow ahead. Take a mobile telephone with you and make sure it is fully charged.

its common sense really, something a lot of people in this area seem to lack.

Common sense issues. If drivers need to be told these then they should not have a licence anyway.

Saw two large gritters last night one on Eastern Avenue the other Victoria Avenue, hear that there IS enough for continued gritting for two weeks with further supplies ready to be delivered at short notice, my sisters girlfriend works at the quarry.

Instead of just advising the Idiots, WHY don't the police get OUT there and Stop them for a change?

Where I live, IF we see a cops car on the road, we feel it is just a Mirage, as they are SO VERY rare, despite having a local police station.

About the ONLY time we see them, is when a VIP is about, or there has been a Serious road Crash, but otherwise, NO!

"POLICE have issued advice to motorists to only travel if necessary"

Ridiculous nanny state claptrap- I don't need the Police to advise me when I can go outside - guess what? I can decide these things for myself thanks! and the roads and conditions today were perfectly fine.

Thanks to the well gritted roads.

The gritters obviously helped give confidence, however the snow was not settling on any of the side roads that were not gritted, so was not a 'real test' today by any means.

I bet your local police station is closed or mainly office space.
Badger the Government who have cut police budgets and resources to an unacceptable level.

Don't blame the government, they've got to pay those bankers' bonuses somehow.

Zzzzzzzzz

Some people are NEVER happy! The grit also helps stop the roads icing up I believe, with wet roads and grit on them they did not become a problem so gritting WAS needed.

Says it all really. Regardless of the weather it would appear these idiots would have crashed anyway.

Poilce would be better off issuing a 'F*ckwits stay at home and of the roads' warning.

Bad weather? It's a bit cold for this time of year. That is all. This is Southend FFS not Ontario.

(This of course has been caused by global warming / climate change / choose whichever suits your straw man argument de jour)
