THREE tax enquiry offices are set to close next year putting a handful of jobs at risk in south Essex.
HM Revenue and Customs (HRMC) announced yesterday that it plans to close all 281 of its enquiry centres throughout the country, with three of those offices in Southend, Basildon, and Grays.
Unions estimate that between 10 and 20 jobs will be lost at the three south Essex centre and have slammed the Government’s plans.
The centres give face-to-face help to people with tax questions.
Andrew Lord, spokesman for the Public and Commercial Services Union for south Essex, said: “We will be looking to campaign against this as we believe that it is very short-sighted.
“We are very concerned about the loss of services to the taxpayer at quite a modest saving for the Government."
In the whole of Essex, 53 jobs are under threat.

Not only that, when you do finally get to speak to someone they are generally most unhelpful. I actually said to one of them a couple of weeks ago that I thought i was calling a help line, but that in actual fact that was proving not to be the case. As a tip, if you do need to call them, do not use their 0845 number, enter their number into www.saynoto0870.com. This web site will give you an alternative landline number which is cheaper.
