Jazz trumpeter Kenny Ball dies

Jazz trumpeter Kenny Ball has died in hospital where he was being treated for pneumonia.

Les Squires, his manager, said the musician, who was in his early 80s, died in Basildon Hospital in Essex at 7.30am on Thursday.

He said: "He had been in and out of hospital recently but sadly this time he did not come out, but he was playing to the end."

Mr Squires said Ball, who lives in Wickford, was survived by his partner and his son, Keith, who had joined his father on stage playing with his group The Jazzmen.

He said the musician had continued to perform, having left hospital to play a gig in Germany at the end of January, before being re-admitted.

Really sad to hear of the passing of the great Kenny Ball. I had great pleasure in meeting this lovely man several times. My thoughts are with his family and friends. May he now rest in peace. x

Perhaps Kenny would still be with us if he had been transferred to another hospital. "Basildon Hospital what can I say" Rest in peace Kenny we shall all miss your live music.

Kenny Ball managed to keep Trad Jazz in the charts at a time when the fashion was fading for that style of music. No one will forget " Midnight In Moscow" if they were listening to pop during the 60s. A gem. Great that he managed to keep playing for so long. He was a real character, bless him. R.I.P.Kenny

Great music from a great Musician. Always seemed cheerful. I think Midnight in Moscow by Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen must have been in everyone's record collection in the '60's.
Rest in peace Kenny.

Great guy real nice man. We all grew up with him and we were extras in a film he was in in 1963 called live it up (not a Oscar winning film but great in its time) with Stevie Marrrriot, Davey Hemmings and a few others withe Gene Vincent and an Aussie girl Patsy and a few more of us out the Ilford Manor Park and Forest gate area. We went to Buckinghamshire to film for a week. Great days and memorys for life. R.I.P
