Village Green festival returns

CHALKWELL’S popular Village Green Festival returns this year. The event is back after 2012’s success with over 30 000 festival goers.

Metal's popular, free arts and music festival in Chalkwell Park will take place on Saturday July 13, from 11am until 9pm.

There are eight different stages showcasing music, dance and other entertainment.

Only five years ago Village Green was a small scale celebration of the arts and music of Southend. Now, it regularly attracts thosands.

Headliners are yet to be confirmed but The Skints are set to perform.

A Metal spokeswoman said: “A key to its success is the calibre of acts and the diversity of performances: recent festivals have seen artists such as Ballet Black, the Royal Opera House, Molly Nyman , Harry Escott and the Samphire Band, Billy Bragg, James Taylor Quartet, Camera Obscura, Carleen Anderson and, local boy, Phill Jupitus jumping on stage with the Blockheads.

“But the strength of the festival is its family centred ethos with every activity arts-led.”

The event is supported by Southend Council and Arts Council England.

Metal are currently looking for people interested in having a stall in the Marketplace to showcase their creative work: The deadline to apply is April 26. Food retailers have until March 15 to apply.

Volunteers are also needed to work back stage, in marketing, stewarding, capturing the event on film, artist liaison, hospitality and other site staff.

Well done to all involved in getting this on again. It's a good day out.

I would like to see Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly perform there, he's a local lad.

This is a really good addition to Southend's outdoor summer attractions. With the potential demise of the airshow it would be great to see more funding put into this, get some more high-profile acts, even charging a couple of quid wouldn't be too onerous. Went last year, lovely weather, had a great time. Gets a bit crowded round the main stage, mind.

This event gets better each year.....must be a reason why they don't do it for 2 days, if theres no real reason then they should carry it on Sunday, it makes sense seeing the amount of people that attend also looks a lot of work for just a 1 dayer.

Let's hope the Carnival funfair will be back this year too. Really missed it last year

I imagine the logistics of a two-dayer are tricky. Overnight security for the whole site, stuff like that. Maybe one day in the future but not yet.

i seem to recall a few security men a few days before loitering about when it was all being built up....i really don't think the security thing is whats stopping them....could it be council permission, only Metal know why...i think i might ask them., the dance/music tent with snowboy was excellent last year, i could have watched for hours, just something different.

Just out of interest, how MUCH is the Council contributing to this, in this year of cut backs and proposal for us to have to pay for black rubbish bags? Who decides this is worthwhile to support, airshow is not?

Call them on 01702 470700 and ask them, this really has to be better than the current airshow, try it for yourself.
